BIT Mesra founded by the renowned philanthropist and visionary industrialist, Late Shri BM Birla
Department of Mechanical Engineering established

1957

Dr. Zakir Hussain visited BIT
Department of Civil Engineering was established

1963

The right wing of BIT Mesra got operational

1964

The first technical institution to establish a Department of Space Engineering & Rocketry
First to establish static rocket test firing facility and to offer P.G. programmes in association with the Indian Space Research Organization (ISRO)

1969

First to establish Small Industries Research and Development Organization (SIRDO) as a launch pad for small manufacturing enterprises, managed by graduates of BIT

1972

The first institution in India to be granted autonomous status, making special provision in Bihar State University Act

BIT Lalpur established

Silver Jubilee year at BIT

1983

Department of Computer Science & Engineering was established

1984

The then Prime Minister Smt. Indira Gandhi presided over 71st Indian Science Congress held at BIT Mesra

1985

BIT-STEP came into existence as a registered society, the first STEP in the country

1986

Becomes a Deemed University under section 3 of the UGC Act

2000

Established overseas centre in the Kingdom of Bahrain

2003

Department of Applied Physics, ECE, EEE were identified by DST, GoI to receive support under the FIST Programme
Accredited by NAAC

2004

International Centre for research in "Wireless and Mobile Communication" inaugurated.
Chosen as Indian participating institution in the Asia Link Programme supported by the European Commission in the area of "Wireless and Mobile Communication Technologies"

2007

BIT Entrepreneurship Development Cell set up

2009

Department of Applied Mathematics establishes a Land Surface Atmosphere and Micrometeorological Observational System (LATAMOS) comprising of agro meteorological observatory and micrometeorological tower

2011

Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam was the Chief Guest at the 21st Convocation held on 24th February 2011

2016

Diamond Jubilee celebrated
Former President Shri Pranab Mukherjee presides at the convocation as Chief Guest, at the newly renovated G.P. Birla Auditorium
